Alex Smith

Alex completed a Juris Doctor with Distinction at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law. He received academic awards from the Faculty of Law, including course prizes in constitutional law, evidence law, and public international law. Prior to law school, Alex obtained an Honours Bachelor of Arts with High Distinction from the University of Toronto studying economics and international relations.

During law school, Alex strived to explore his areas of interest outside of the classroom. His extracurricular involvement included his work as a Co-Editor-in-Chief of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review, a Division Leader and Caseworker for the Refugee and Immigration Law Division of Downtown Legal Services, an Associate Editor of the Indigenous Law Journal, and a Student Academic Advisor. Alex was also an active mooter, competing in the Cassels Brock Cup and the national and international rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot.

Following law school, Alex articled at Torys LLP in Toronto and became a member of the Ontario bar. He subsequently completed judicial clerkships at the Court of Appeal for Ontario with Justices Kathryn Feldman, Alexandra Hoy, Grant Huscroft, and Ian Nordheimer, and at the Supreme Court of Canada with Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin.

Alex will explore topics of interest in public law and international law while at Cambridge. Following his studies, he intends to return to his hometown, Toronto, to practice as a litigator.
